To see a Broadway play or musical is to step into a world that envelops you with an experience you cannot find anywhere else. Theatre has been around since ancient times and for good reason. There is absolutely nothing like watching the actors, hearing the live musical scores and going on a journey with fellow theatre-goers. It makes movies seem like flimsy comic books in comparison. Fortunately, there are many excellent shows on Broadway and in major cities across North America today. The following list is the top ten plays you might consider attending with a date or a friend. Each one of these delivers an experience you won't soon forget. One of the most popular mega-hits of Broadway is Wicked...
Among the Broadway Musicals South Pacific is...
Among all the Broadway musicals, “South Pacific” has the most powerful songs and a thought provoking storyline. What happens when people fall in love with each other during a war? Do they remain under the mercy of the wrath of war? Or can they emerge as winners? “South Pacific” has created history not only for its love story interwoven with war-time, but also for highlighting the taboo topics of racism and prejudice. Eyebrows were raised. Creators were pressurized. However, there emerged a musical story that created history and became one of the greatest musicals on Broadway. The author of the book “Tales of the South Pacific” had to ask the creators of the musical, Hammerstein and...

Wicked Musical Broadway
The Wicked play is an adaptation of the book Wicked: the life and times of the Wicked Witches of the West, authored by Gregory Maguire. It is commonly referred to as the stage version of Wicked that is a ‘contemporized’ adaptation. According to the broadway musical play the stage adapter named Winnie Holzman has unveiled Elpha as the main character, i.e. the Wicked Witch of the West, who though is a smart witch but very misapprehended. She has been portrayed as a typical witch that has green colored skin. In total comparison to her is the good witch named Glinda, who is beautiful to look at but in some ways a little stuck up. With the commencement of the play the audience is presented with...
"Annie" Rates As One of the Most...
Annie - 4 Stars (Excellent) "Annie" is certainly one of the most uplifting, harrowing and positive Broadway musicals in movie history. Even if you did not see Annie as a moviegoer, you would recognize the key words to its award-winning signature song "Tomorrow": "The sun'll come out Tomorrow, so you gotta hang on till Tomorrow. Come what may. Tomorrow, Tomorrow, I love ya, Tomorrow. You're only a day away". Based on Thomas Meehan's musical score of the enormously successful stage play, and Carol Sobieski's screenplay, Annie was directed by John Houston in his first and last effort directing a movie musical. None of their talent was wasted. A tip of the hat to Carol Sobieski's effort with the...

Phantom of the Opera - A Comparison of the Play...
The Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera has always been a favorite of mine. I have had the opportunity to see the play twice while vacationing in New York, and I've also seen the production that came to my hometown. All of the performances were excellent. Because of my love for the play, I was a little hesitant about the release of the movie version of Phantom of the Opera. I consider myself a big Phantom Phan, and my daughter is an out right Phantom Phanatic. So when the movie version was showng in limited release in December of 2004, she and I were one of the first in line to see it. We both had read the reviews and were prepared to totally dislike the movie version. However, we...

Broadway Musicals - Cats
Some of the greatest Broadway shows are no longer available as live performances but have been recorded so that they bring out people get to see them even in future, long after the show as already has been performed. It grasped audiences in multitudes. People could not stop talking about it long after it was performed. This is always a great reward for the playwrights. The reviews for this show were also very worthwhile. A script could be amazing but the troupe meant to bring out the story could be horrendous...

Opera is one of the oldest forms of musical entertainment, actually dating back to the 1500's. And although many modern music fans dismiss opera as antiquated and theatrical, opera lovers understand the timeless appeal of its musical majestry. If one digs a little deeper while examining the merits of opera, it's clear there are many commonalities between our daily lives and this musical genre. Opera, after all, is a story. A story of two people in love, a romance gone bad, or maybe a happy ending that warms the heart. Simply put, opera is a reflection of daily life, and something that resonates within all of us. So just for fun, let's look at a list of the Top 10 operas of all time, and a brief plot...
Here are the reasons why most operas are performed in their original languages: 1. Simplicity. Major opera companies employ star performers from a whole bunch of different countries. Star power is supposedly a moneymaker (that is no longer true, but opera's powers-that-be are too conservative for their own good). As a company manager, you don't have to bother about troupe (team) issues, nor rehearsals, for that matter. On any given night, you have at your disposal a bass from Japan, a soprano from Italy, a tenor from Russia, a mezzo from Spain, a baritone from Arizona, and another baritone from Cuba, plus some extras from Mexico, France, and Germany. All of them know their parts in the original...

The Threepenny Opera and the Musical Gestus of...
As a composer, Weill contributed to the gestic concept of The Threepenny Opera by creating ways to musically assist the performer in showing the appropriate attitude at any given moment. The music, Brecht said, “became an active collaborator in the stripping bare of the middleclass corpus of ideas” (Brecht on Theatre, 85-6). Music deliberately set at odds with its lyrics works to emphasize the satirical nature of The Threepenny Opera and the folly of its bourgeois characters. The satirical gest is released upon the audience at the very moment the orchestra begins with its first note of the performance. The ballad is played at an easy, blues-like tempo and with a deceptive near-repetition of its...

Musicals have always been the one thing that I look forward to every time they are released. They have a way to make you feel like you are part of the act. Based on what the act is all about, it is possible to feel like you were actually there when it was happening. Remember not to leave the young ones when you go to watch because they are bound to enjoy it even more than you will. From his home high atop a mountain, the sweet voices of the Whos seem like nails on a chalkboard to the grumpy Grinch...
As you probably know, other than simple folk tunes, when you play more jazzy songs, or pop, you usually don't use simple triads. Example: The common progression II-V-I in a folk tune might be Dm - G - C. (Or in folk songs you might use a IV-V-1, like F - G - C.) But in jazz, you'd normally play II-V-I in seventh chords, like Dm7, G7, CMaj7. (We'll leave pop and blues to the side for now.) One of the interesting things about this little progression is how urgently that G7 chords yearns to resolve to the C chord. The reason it yearns so hard is that there are two notes in the C-major scale that are super-dissonant against the C-tonic note. One is B, a half-step below C. The other is Gb, a flatted...
